Puerto Princesa Underground River for the New 7 Wonders of the World!

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSRNP) is one of the most important biodiversity conservation areas of the Philippines. It features a spectacular limestone or karst landscape that contains an 8.2 km long underground river. A distinguishing feature of the river is that it flows directly into the sea, and the lower half portion of the river is brackish and subject to tidal influence. The area also represents significant habitat for biodiversity conservation. It contains a full mountain to the sea ecosystem and protects forests, which are among the most significant in Asia.

The PPPSRNP is designated a core area for the Palawan Biosphere Reserve under the Man and Biosphere Program. In recognition of its globally significant natural properties, it was inscribed to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s of (UNESCO) List of Natural World Heritage Sites. Inscription to the list confirms the exceptional and universal value of the Site that deserves to be protected for the benefit of all humanity.

The PPSRNP is managed by the City Government of Puerto Princesa based on a program centered on environmental conservation and sustainable development. It has the distinction of being the first national park devolved and successfully managed by a Local Government Unit. It has been cited as an example of best practices for biodiversity conservation and sustainable tourism in the Philippines.

The Puerto Princesa Underground River is reputed to be the longest navigable underground river in the World. It is one of the few such rivers which the public can easily experience and appreciate. It is the official entry of the Philippines and is 1 of the 28 finalists to the Search for the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

It is a source of pride and a key element in the identity of the people of Puerto Princesa in particular, and of the Philippines as a whole.

Globe Tatt Awards: Jonver’s Picks

Disclaimer: This is purely subjective. Your violent reaction is very welcome, but please do respect my preferences.

These are my personal bets in the ongoing Globe Tatt Awards (read more about it here.) As subjective as it may sound, pardon the bias that I have. Some I’m really a fan of, some are my friends, and some are just people who I really believe in. Again, know that this is considering purely my discretion.

The One. Lori Baltazar of Dessert Comes First, one of the longest standing quality food blogs in the Philippines. She is one of my inspirations when I was starting my blog, and I remain a fan of her intimate foodie writing up until now. Loyal readers will most probably agree with me that one can feel Ms. Lori’s love of food through her writing, photos, and simple, whimsical blurbs. She may be a little behind the social media bandwagon (i.e. having her Facebook fan page and Twitter account just recently,) but Ms. Lori proves that she is queen of it all.

Ballbreaker. Who else broke balls when it comes to having himself heard? Popular for his Damaso act last year, Carlos Celdran (or @TheManilaHilton. He temporarily changed his Twitter ID, LOL!) is truly a hardcore ballbreaker, whether it be advocating for one’s beliefs, or otherwise breaking others’ for that matter. They may jail him, but they can never stop his swagger.

Stylisimo. You may have seen her in her long flowy dresses. Maybe in skyscraper heels only goddesses (we think!) could only don. Or was it a nine-inch heel-less Kermit Tesoro?! Aside from beauty and brains, juggling executive and modeling stints, Divine Lee puts the divine in intervention. You cannot miss being struck by her beauty and style. Truly, today’s icon of an empowered woman – stylish, ferocious, and productive. Nothing can be more Divine.

Indie Rocker. Hundreds of indie bands are born everyday, but only few makes it to the top. What does Up Dharma Down have? A unique set of musical aesthetic ready to nourish your ears and soul. Their eclectic sound-making gives a certain degree of elopement from the present and a journey to a new realm. It talks to your heart, it soothes the soul. What more can I say?

Wordslayer. There would never be a concrete explanation to define my love for DCF. Truly, only a genuine love of writing breeds a good piece.

Artiste. Anyone who have seen Robbie Bautista a.k.a. The Creative Dork’s work could easily relate it to cute and fluffy. It is, anyway. You cannot resist looking into products of his self-love. Vain as it is, nevertheless creative.

Tech Junkie.Veteran to the world of blogging, Jayvee Fernandez writes about the latest in the techie universe. His attention to detail in reviewing every inch of a gadget shows his expertise in this field. He may be reviewing gadgets everytime, but he communes also with the nature by diving, and taking photographs of deep sea creatures. Such a holistic person he is, ain’t he?

#Thought-Mover. It would be a bit normal for celebrities to be a mover in the social media, given their popularity and status. But for blogger and social media specialist Tonyo Cruz, the thinker in him and his uncanny drive to communicate his opinion and share thoughts with others brought him the #sentisabado fame. Whether it be reminiscing childhood memories or advocating one’s beliefs, Tonyo takes a stand and aims to change the world, one thought at a time.

Video Slinger. He may not have spent his years in the Philippines, but definitely he traces his roots here, and he’s hella proud to be Filipino. With his gifted voice and comical acts, Mikey Bustos takes Youtube by storm with his unconventional guides on how to be a Filipino. Others may laugh at him, but his love for the Philippines is something to be admired of.

The Advocate. It’s so hard to pick from two of my favorite advocates in the social media, so I voted for both of them. Beth Angsioco‘s advocacy of many issues concerning our government and society is impressive, taking heights to air whatever she thinks needs to be aired. While Nina Terol-Zialcita‘s movement to promote change in self (and further into the society) should be recognized and shared so that it can be emulated.

You can vote for your favorite social media personality here up until August 24 only!

Social media has gone the heights in our society. It can no longer be denied that it affects our lives outside the screen. The awards are just symbols of their contribution to this ever-changing medium. The real deal, though, is how they have used social media to steer a new generation of critical and creative thinkers.
